Friday's match between Leon and Vancouver Whitecaps has gone down in the history books of football. Never before have there been as many penalties as there were in that match - as many as 38.
The two teams met on the first day of the Leagues Cup. The new competition does not allow for a draw, but if the score is level at the end of 90 minutes, there is a penalty shoot-out.
That is what happened in the Leon - Vancouver Whitecaps match. Goals from Moreno, Cordova and Hernandez took the match to the penalty spot, with the score at 2-2 at the final whistle.
Hernandez, Cubas, Borja Sanchez and Martins all missed their shots before sudden death. There, one by one they scored, with the exception of the eighth round, where Ambriz and Laborda missed. Even the goalkeepers Cota and Takaoka both took their penalties.
This went on until the 19th round, penalties 37 and 38, respectively. Borja Sanchez recovered from his mistake and scored, but Martins, just after, missed the penalty and thus lost the match.
