Scotland face Israel in a crucial UEFA Nations League match on Thursday, though the 28-year-old instead opted to focus on his own fitness improvements rather than help his national side, resulting in a backlash from fans and media alike.
Though Mulgrew did reveal Griffiths would still be welcomed back into the fold. Asked if players see another side to decisions such as these, the defender said: "I suppose we understand these things a wee bit better.
"Everyone is different. We all have different views and, in certain ways, we know a bit more than fans. But I’m sure there will be certain boys in the squad who have views similar to the fans.
"If that’s what he thinks and feels is right, to use the extra days to work on his fitness, then that’s between himself, Celtic and Scotland. I assume it’s best for him. It’s his decision.
"There wouldn’t be an issue if he came back in. There is a good bunch of boys here. We get on, work hard and have respect for each other.
"People will respect his decision and hope, when Leigh does come back in, that he is ready to play."
Scotland boss Alex McLeish has warned Leigh Griffiths that his international career could be at risk after the decision.
