Everton's game against West Brom on Saturday was marred by a gruesome injury to Republic of Ireland international James McCarthy.
The misfielder made a lung-bursting run to get back and prevent Salomon Rondon from scoring a certain goal on the hour mark, only to break his leg in the process.
Rondon connected with McCarthy's leg rather than the ball, causing the Everton man to leave the pitch on a stretcher having been administered oxygen.
Such was the extent of the injury that Rondon was visibly reduced to tears on the pitch.
Everton boss Sam Allardyce confirmed after the match that McCarthy had broken both his tibia and fibula.
