Very few people had heard of Kylian Mbappe before the knockout match between Manchester City and Monaco. In fact, his football name was Mbappe Lottin at the time, which was how he was presented in the lists of football's promising young talents.
The French striker revealed himself to be the last young star of Monaco's academy. At 18-years-of-age, he was nowhere near being a starter in the first team - he had played just 25 minutes of Champions League football until the quarter-finals of the 2016/17 season. He played 13 minutes against Bayern Leverkusen, seven in the first leg against CSKA Moscow and five in the second.
However, Jardim give him the chance of a lifetime in the first leg tie at the Etihad. Regular starter Germain was on the bench, and Falcao was the only point of attack. With number 29 on his back, Mbappe constantly came in from the left, letting everyone know who he was when he scored to make it 1-2 to Monaco. This only lasted momentarily, however, as City eventually came back in a goal-fest that finished 5-3 to the home side.
By then, photos of the French forward started to appear. When he opened the scoring in the return leg after just eight minutes, these photos were joined by stories on the front pages, in news and radio programs. He started off a comeback which Bakayoko secured in the 77th minute to make it 3-1. He also had a goal ruled out after 16 minutes, proving to be a nightmare for Guardiola and his team due to his pace, power and raw talent. It was an electrifying knock-out round in the memories of some, although one to forget for City fans.
Since then, Mbappe hasn't returned to play Man City. Now one of PSG's main stars along with Neymar in a project that rivals that of the 'Sky Blues', he arrives with plenty more credentials than what he possessed in 2017.
He has accumulated 27 goals and 15 assists in the Champions League during 3,356 minutes of play across 44 matches. Furthermore, he arrives in fine form in the European competition - he has totalled eight goals, one assist and one goal ruled out (in the last clash with Bayern) over the last five matches.
