Big things have been expected of the youngster, ever since he made his first-team debut in Gelsenkirchen at the age of just 17.
- What sort of player is he? -
In his formative years, the diminutive starlet was seen as a technically gifted and fleet of foot No. 10, able to either dribble past oppoenents at will or use his passing range to negate his relative lack of physicality.
From the day he made his debut Meyer became a fixture in the first team overnight, something which arguable hampered his development as he failed to kick on following a number of promising early perfromances.
Meyer was held in such high esteem as a youngster that he actually made his debut for the full Germany team before the U21s, though he has managed just four appearances in five years for his country.
- What is his situation? -
Following Leon Goretzka's decision to join Bayern Munich at the end of the season, Meyer has followed in his team-mate's footsteps, rejecting a new deal with Schalke and is now seemingly set for a move elsewhere, with Arsenal, Tottenham and Liverpool all reportedly interested in the German.
Despite still being just 22, Meyer has played almost 150 times in the Bundesliga, meaning that as well as promise, he can also offer potentially interested parties experience as well.
- What can he offer Premier League sides? -
Following a disappointing 2016/17 campaign that often saw the 22-year-old forced to play as a false nine, 2017/18 has come of something of a renaissance for the playmaker.
Rookie manager Domenico Tedesco decided to go against everything that he had been told about Meyer and deploy him as a holding midfielder in a two, rather than a more advanced position and the results have been impressive.
Meyer's ability to retain and recycle possession has proved the perfect fit in a deeper role, with his passing accuracy of 89.5% the seventh best in the entire Bundesliga.
Despite his reputation as a playmaker, Meyer has also shown his tenacity in his new role, making more tackles and interceptions than during any previous season of his career and having won possession in midfield more than any other Bundesliga player except Augsburg's Daniel Baier.
Interestingly, Meyer features above soon-to-be Liverpool midfielder Naby Keita in that list, but it is possible that the pair could dovetail nicely in a new-look 'Reds' midfield, with Emre Can still likely to leave the club in the summer.
Arsenal are known to have been interested in Meyer in the past, whilst Spurs have also been reported to have been keeping tabs on his situation.
Could we be seeing the youngster gracing the pitches of the Premier League come next season?
