Scotland's manager Alex McLeish revealed the news ahead of his side's upcoming Nations League clashes against Israel and Albania.
Ritchie, who has won 15 caps since opting to play for Scotland, has started the last seven games for his club side in the Premier League.
However, the former Birmingham and Aston Villa manager revealed that he would not be part of his plans heading in to the matches.
"I wanted Matt to come in, but he has asked to be left out at the moment," McLeish said.
"It is not something for me to discuss, he had injury issues as well, and again, there is management of his injuries.
"You don't know everyone's private life so you have to respect that."
