It's the end of an era in a way for the 'Albiceleste' as one of the cornerstones of their side for in excess of a decade bid farewell after their World Cup exit.
Mascherano went out in trademark fashion as he became the most booked player in World Cup history in his final game.
The 34-year-old ends his international career having played in one World Cup final and two Copa America finals, losing in all three. However, he did win two Olympic gold medals in 2004 and 2008.
"We don't have anything to be ashamed of, we fought until the end. When you give your all you have to accept that the best team won and that's it," he admitted, clearly emotional.
"I hope these guys can win something in the future, from now on I'll be another fan," he concluded as he said his goodbyes.
