Newcastle earned a hard-fought 1-0 win over United on Saunday and whilst Matt Ritchie scored the winner, Rafa Benitez's side were indebted to a string of fine saves from their loanee goalkeeper.
- Who is he? -
Martin Dubravka is a 29-year-old Solvakian goalkeeper. He is contracted to Sparta Prague, but joined Newcastle on loan during the January transfer window, ending Benitez's long search for a first-choice stopper.
The Spaniard was believed to be keen on a move for Willy Caballero in the summer, but when he joined Chelsea, the 'Geordies' were forced to look elsewhere.
Despite Dubravka's loan only being temporary, Newcastle are believed to have an option to buy the player for £4m at any point during his loan spell.
- What has his career held so far? -
Newcastle are the keeper's fifth professional club, having previously represented MSK Zilina, Ejsberg fB, FC Slovan Liberec and Sparta Prague.
Dubravka is also a full international, though he has only played nine games for Solvakia.
- Will he succeed at Newcastle? -
He has certainly got off to the right start, shutting out Manchester United on his first appearance in a top European league. He certainly looks to be in pole position to start for Newcastle between now and the end of the season and should he contribute to keeping the club in the Premier League it would be no surprise to see him stay in the division even if Newcastle opted against invoking their option to buy.
