The Portuguese couldn’t have wished for a better start. Romelu Lukaku’s composed finish inside three minutes, slotted into Lossl’s near post, put United a goal to the good and in the driving seat. That strike made it 10 goals in 10 FA cup appearances for the big Belgian, but he wasn’t going to stop there...
Huddersfield then enjoyed a promising spell as United sat back on their one goal cushion. An array of long shots from the Terriers, however, didn’t trouble Sergio Romero.
Controversy struck just before half-time when Juan Mata rounded Lossl and passed the ball into an empty net. 2-0? Not yet, referee Kevin Friend consulted VAR and the Spaniard’s goal was ruled out for offside. The home side went into the break with just a one goal deficit thanks to new technology in the ‘beautiful game.’
Huddersfield started the second-half as they ended the first - piling on the pressure. Nevertheless, two wasted free-kicks saw the 'Terriers' punished again by Lukaku who broke quickly on the counterattack to get on the end of a Sanchez through ball. Showing the same composure as he did for his first strike, the Belgian, cool-headed, beat Lossl for the second time in the game and brought his tally up to 20 for the season.
It was now United’s turn to assert their control on the game and the 'Red Devils' began to dominate possession in the midfield. Mourinho threw his French winger Anthony Martial into the mix but his tricky footwork couldn’t create a third goal.
As much as the Terriers tried to get back into the tie, United put their foot on the ball, retained their shape, and had the game all but dead and buried with minutes to go.
A victory, although not as comfortable as the scoreline suggests, sees Mourinho’s men go marching into the next round of the FA Cup and one step closer to emulating their glory in the competition two years ago.
