Olivier Giroud is about to follow in the same footsteps as his compatriot Hugo Lloris. Fabrizio Romano claims he has a verbal agreement with Los Angeles FC to sign a contract that would commit him to the Californian MLS franchise until December 2025. The timing is so because, in North America, the football season runs from the beginning of the year to the end, not ending in May as it does in Europe.
The Italian journalist who brought this agreement to light claims that nothing has been signed yet, but that events could soon come to a head. If so, it remains to be seen whether Milan are willing to release him so that he can settle in the United States as soon as possible or whether they will ask him to stay with the team until the end of the current season so that he can continue to contribute and have a fitting farewell in a few months' time.
Given the level of prominence he enjoys under Stefano Pioli, it is understandable that the San Siro side are keeping him in the squad for the decisive final stretch of the campaign. At 37, the 37-year-old France striker has managed to put in a performance worthy of the big leagues, so he will go to the other side of the 'Pond' with a serious chance of becoming one of the best strikers in the league.
Los Angeles FC knows all too well the business of attracting talent from the world's top competitions. Carlos Vela has been their leading exponent for many years, they have goalkeeper Hugo Lloris on their payroll and recently welcomed the retirement of Gianluigi Buffon, who still works at the club. If they can land Giroud, they will relaunch their image in a league where Inter Miami have emerged as the main international attraction.
