Over 90,000 people packed into the Michigan Stadium to watch England’s two most successful teams battle it out, and a late flurry of goals from Liverpool saw them run out comfortable winners.
The first half was a slow affair, although Klopp’s side certainly had the better of the action. It showed when they went ahead on 27 minutes. Mo Salah was hacked down in the box and Sadio Mane made no mistake from the penalty spot.
However, the lead only lasted three minutes. Andreas Pereira, back with Man United after a couple of loan spells, fired in a peach of a free kick that left the goalkeeper rooted to his spot.
That was all for the first half, and indeed it was not until the 65th minute when the game was sparked back into life. Klopp introduced Xherdan Shaqiri and Daniel Sturridge off the bench and the two combined mere seconds later to put Liverpool back in front.
Shaqiri outmuscled Eric Bailly and cut the ball back to Sturridge who made no mistake in placing a finish into the far corner from the edge of the box. It was three just minutes later thanks to another spot kick. Ojo scored after a foul was given on Andrew Robertson, although replays suggested the Scot tripped himself.
The best was saved for last though and it came through Shaqiri again. The Swiss winger converted a wonderful bicycle kick eight minutes from time to cap a memorable debut in a Liverpool shirt.
It is a worrying result for Mourinho, whose side’s performance seemed to reflect his own in front of the press pack - slow and uninterested. Jurgen Klopp however can go into the season full of confidence, perhaps able to win the trophy that Mourinho has demanded he does.
