However, only three finalists were announced to win the African Player of the Year award. Morocco full-back Achraf Hakimi, Nigeria striker Victor Osimhen and Egypt winger Mohamed Salah, one of whom will be the winner of the coveted award.
Surprising absentees include Al-Hilal goalkeeper Yassine Bounou, who played a key role in Morocco's run to the World Cup in Qatar and won the Europa League with Sevilla last season, and Rihad Mahrez, who played a lesser role at Manchester City than in previous seasons but achieved a historic treble with the Sky Blues by winning the Champions League, Premier League and FA Cup.

CAF Awards 2023 ceremony - Who's nominated for the men's prize?
Mohamed Salah of Egypt and Sadio Mane of Senegal (twice each) and Riyad Mahrez of Algeria are former winners of the award on the shortlist this time. Cameroon pair Andre-Frank Zambo Anguissa and Vincent Aboubacar and Nigerian Victor Osimhen complete the list. The winner will be named at a ceremony in the Moroccan city of Marrakesh on December 11.
In Qatar, Morocco topped a World Cup group that included Belgium and 2018 runners-up Croatia, then eliminated Spain and Portugal before losing to France in the semi-finals. It was the first time an African or Arab nation had reached the penultimate stage of the global showpiece.
The initial shortlist of 10 players was launched by CAF almost a month ago. The first shortlist featured four Moroccan players: Yassine Bounou (Al-Hilal), Achraf Hakimi (Paris Saint-Germain), Sofyan Amrabat (Manchester United) and Youssef En-Nesyri (Sevilla). The Atlas Lions made World Cup history by becoming the first African national team to reach the semi-finals of the biggest competition.
