As reported today by 'L'Equipe' in France, Lille have been officially warned by the 'direction nationale du contrôle de gestion', the body in France responsible for monitoring the accounts of professional football clubs. The DNCG has warned the Nord-Pas-De-Calais club that significant improvement must be shown before the end of the season if they are to avoid this fate.
The relegation would come as a shock to many in France, with 'Les Dogues' not having played outside the top flight since the year 2000. In 2011, with a team featuring Gervinho, Yohan Cabaye and a young Eden Hazard, Lille won a league and cup double - their first wins in either competition since the 1950s.
On the pitch the side has not fared much better, and relegation was a distinct possibilty before the authorities intervened. After a poor start to the season former manager Marcelo Bielsa was relieved of his duties and is now taking the club to court over claims of unfair dismissal, suing for €18million.
With a match against PSG to come on Saturday as well this could be a dark day for all connected with the club.
