Chelsea and Eintracht Frankfurt missed a great opportunity to land one of the most promising strikers of this summer transfer window.
Elye Wahi, who was one of the surprise packages in Ligue 1 22/23, scoring 19 goals and providing five assists in 33 games for Montpellier at just 20 years of age, could have signed for the Blues or the German side.
In the end, the French striker opted to continue playing in his home league and ended up joining Lens, for whom he has already made two appearances this season. Many were surprised by this choice and the young striker explained the reasons for his choice in an interview with 'L'Equipe'.
"I surprised myself. My first objective was to stay in France, so I think I made the right choice. At the very beginning, there were no French clubs, only Monaco. As time went by, Lens approached us and we managed to reach an agreement," he said.
"I did not want to sign for Chelsea just for the sake of it. Frankfurt was close — and more than Chelsea. They had to wait for Randal Kolo Muani’s departure and waiting for it was too complicated," the Lens striker concluded.
