Ernesto Valverde left many of his more experienced starters, opting to blood a few youngsters as well as get a look at a few fringe players. Ousmane Dembele started in the front three alongside Munir and Malcom. The Brazilian had recently been reported as wanting out after not getting enough playing time, but he did little to convince here.
In fairness, the rain was pouring in northern Spain, and it may have acted as a leveller for the team from Segunda B. For most of the game, they had the pick of the chances and Barcelona had Jasper Cillessen in goal to thank as they went in level at half-time.
In fact, the biggest action of the first half for the Catalans was an unfortunate injury to Sergi Samper. The midfielder was one of their most promising academy products when he was younger, but a succession of injuries have stunted his growth and he left the field in tears as another one surfaced.
The second half was little improvement for the ‘Blaugrana’, and they laboured on a slick surface and struggled to piece together any real attacks. That was until the 91st minute. Arthur, who had come off the bench, won a soft free kick and Dembele’s resulting ball in was turned home by Clement Lenglet.
The Frenchman saved his side’s blushes, and ensured that Barcelona will go into the second leg - in a full five weeks’ time - with a slim advantage. Heartbreaking for Leonesa, but they can take pride from the way they acquitted themselves.
