Costa Rica finally scored their first goal of the 2018 World Cup through Kendall Waston to cancel Blerim Dzemaili's opener in the first half.
They looked to be cruising to their first points of this summer's tournament until Drmic struck late for the Swiss.
Denis Zakaria played a low ball into the box from the right, which Drmic capitalised on after a slip from Johnny Acosta, curling a classy first-time shot into the corner to make it 2-1.
It then looked like Switzerland had secured a last-minute victory until the referee pointed to the spot after Bryan Ruiz went down in the area.
A VAR review followed which eventually overturned the decision after Ruiz was shown to be in an offside position during the buid-up.
It appeared as if the Swiss had negotiated the trouble until the referee pointed at the spot again just a minute later after he had adjudged Zakaria to have shoulder-barged Joel Campbell.
This time the decision stood, despite arguably being very soft, and Ruiz stepped up to take the decisive the penalty for Costa Rica.
In a bizarre turn of events, his effort struck the underside of the bar, rebounded onto the back of opposing goalkeeper Yann Somer before ricocheting into the back of the net for an own goal.
Costa Rica didn't care though as the goal meant they secured a 2-2 draw against the Swiss and their first and only point of this summer's competition.
