Argentina will be without Manuel Lanzini for the World Cup after the West Ham attacking midfielder suffered a ruptured anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee during a training session.
The team confirmed the injury in a tweet, stating: "Manuel Lanzini suffered, in today's morning training, the rupture of the anterior cruciate ligament of his right knee."
Given the serious nature of the injury, it is also certain that the West Ham midfielder will miss the opening of the coming Premier League season.
It comes as a huge blow to Lanzini who looked to feature as a key component of Argentina's team, and questions have now been raised as to who may be called up as his replacement.
Already, the talk has shifted back to Mauro Icardi, who was sensationally left out of the initial squad.
