The first half was a nightmare for Werder Bremen, who visited Koln in a new Bundesliga matchday. The Koln side scored five goals in the first 36 minutes of the game.

In the first half of the match between Koln and Werder Bremen at the Rhein Energie Stadion, the home side got off to a flying start. Koln went into the break with a 5-1 lead.

It only took the 'Greissbocke' just 36 minutes of play to get back on track, and almost settle, a game that was very much in their favour against a team that was very vulnerable to the home side attacks.

Maina opened the scoring in the 9th minute after an assist from Skhiri. Then, in the 16th and 21st minute, Steffen Tigges scored his brace. Then, in the 30th minute, Maina returned the favour for Skhiri to score the fourth. And, finally, in the 36th minute, Huseinbasic scored the fifth goal.

Two minutes later, in the 38th minute, Füllkurg scored the consolation goal to close the gap on this heavy scoreline. With this scoreline, the game went to the break. A 5-1 scoreline that put Werder Bremen to shame and, by the end of the game, it was 7-1.
