Lies, sex, alcohol and parties in all the cities he lived in while he was a footballer. Jermaine Pennant was at clubes like Arsenal and Liverpool and he had a good nightlife while at all of them.
The ex-Zaragoza player talked about this aspect of his career in an interview. He recalled what he did before making his first ever start for Arsenal under Arsene Wenger.
"I was just 19 and the night before I decided to go to a party. I remember that I had breakfast in a McDonald's-.. The worsr possible preparation! I scored a hat-trick despite having a terrible hangover. My roommates said all sorts to me," Pennant confessed.
He was almost coming to end of his teenage days, which provoked the anger of Arsenal, but not from his coach. "Wenger was unbelievable. I was a bit scared. He had a reputation of being strict, but he was completely the opposite with me. He said to me that I could go as far as I wanted. He was strict and brilliant, I will always remember those years in a great team. Despite everything he had to put up with," he said.
In addition, Pennant said that he could have gone to Real Madrid: Sky Andrew, my agent, had negotiations with the president and he gave the green light to the agreement for close to four million euros, but Juande Ramos was not aware of that. So when he found out, he decided to put paid to it. I went from potentially going to Real Madrid to signing for Portsmouth. A massive change."
He didn't go to Real Madrid, but years later, he did play in Spain, for Zaragoza. He remembered the parties he enjoyed with Songo'o. "We didn't play much so we used to get the train to Madrid or Barcelona and have a good time. I spent with him one of the craziest nights in Spain, a terrible trip to Barcelona. We had agreed to meet some girls and we took the train at 6.30 to reach the train. But it got delayed and we were in trouble. I felt bad," he added.
But the night he remembers most was the one in Marbella. "I had said to the club that I had to go home to sort out some personal issues. I was given permission, but instead of that, I went with all my friends to Marbella. They were incredible nights, but it didn't go well. I missed the return flight, I didn't go to training. The club I went to published photos of me partying on their website... terrible," he explained.
Lastly, Pennant spoke about the story of the abandoned Porsche. "It was 31st August and I was about to miss the train to Madrid. So I got out of the car as fast as I could and I left the keys in the glove compartment of the car. I knew I was going to come back to recover it, I'm not so stupid as to abandon such an expensive car. The club called me because a security guard was scared. He thought there was something odd with the car, that it was a car bomb. It was a curious story," he concluded.
