Egypt, who had fought valiantly throughout the game, escaping earlier scares from the potent front two of Luis Suarez and Edinson Cavani, were punished late on in the game by a goal from a set-piece.
Uruguay won a free-kick down the right flank of the pitch in the 89th minute, and Carlos Sanchez was the man to deliver it. The attacking midfielder fired it in, and jumping high was Atletico Madrid centre back Jose Maria Gimenez.
Gimenez rose above the rest to nod a fantastic header into the top corner past Ahmed El-Shenawy, making it 0-1. The goal sent the Uruguay players wild and, unsurprisingly, Egypt were heartbroken, as evidenced by shots of Mo Salah looking distraught on the bench.
