The Glasgow-based team won the Scottish League Cup match 1-3 against Kilmarnock, but it was not all positive news as Murphy had to be removed from the pitch on a stretcher.
After being injured, Murphy has been understandably upset and Gerrard thinks that the pitch is to blame for his player's plight.
"If you ask Jamie right now he'll say it was a pitch incident," the manager said after the match.
"I'm not here to disrespect Kilmarnock and their playing facilities. I know it helps support the running of their club. But my opinion is elite football shouldn't have any plastic pitches."
The incident means that Murphy is almost guaranteed to miss the Europa League qualification game against FC Ufa on Thursday, in which a win would see Rangers take a huge step towards the group stages of the competition.
