Former Liverpool boss Klopp discussed replacing Mo Salah with Man Utd's Antony

Mohamed Salah's contract with Liverpool is months away from expiring, however it is not the first time the club have found themselves in this situation. In the months leading up to the 2022 summer transfer window Salah was set to become a free agent, but former manager Jurgen Klopp thought he had found the perfect player to replace the Egyptian gem. 

With Salah being tipped to leave Anfield - reports highlighting the Saudi League as a concrete destination - Klopp identified Antony as a potential successor, as per 'The Times'. The Brazilian was shining for Ajax at the time, ending the 2021/22 campaign with 12 goals and 10 assists for the Dutch side.

However, the same source understands that Mike Gordon, who was responsible "for the day to day running of the club back then", decided the most sensible option would be to renew Salah. The 32-year-old penned a three-year-deal that same summer, thus ruling out the possibility for the Brazil international to join.

Despite Salah's renewal costing the Reds nearly £55 million, due to his £350,000 weekly salary, it is safe to say Liverpool made the right call on Antony, who ended up moving to Manchester United for £82million. It remains to be seen how things will turn out between Liverppol and Salah this time round as the two parties are reportedly yet to begin talks over a contract extension.
