Marco Silva's men made a bad start to the game, as Spanish international striker Rodrigo netted the first goal before Everton's Cenk Tosun drilled the ball in to the bottom corner smartly from inside the Valencia box just minutes later.
The Spanish side went ahead again through Rodrigo again, with the Premier League outfit's defence being found wanting again.
Defender Michael Keane rose highest from a Gyfli Sigurdsson corner just before the break to leave the game finely poised as it went in to the second half.
The beginning of the second half saw the introduction of Lucas Digne, who recently signed for the club from Barcelona, impress on his debut for the 'Toffees'.
It took until 75th minute for the decisive goal to be scored, with Valencia midfielder Daniel Wass scoring with a right-footed strike from outside the area.
While it is clear that Silva is trying to put his stamp on the team, and that his team had moments of inspiration in attack, their defensive frailites were exposed on several occasions.
It remains to be see if Everton will be able to add to their back line before the end of the transfer window on 9th August.
