Moussa Sissoko appeared to be on his way to Everton before the move took a late u-turn and ended up joining Spurs.
Everton claimed that they had withdrawn their interest in the player and Farhad Moshiri has given is view of events.
"[Moussa] Sissoko is a great player. But when I bought into Everton, I made it clear I was proud to join a family," a statement from Moshiri read.
"And we don't turn our backs on our own. Keeping James McCarthy was a priority and ultimately we could not proceed with a deal that would jeopardize his place at Everton.
"We wish Sissoko the best".
However, Moshiri may be trying to cover up the fact that the player never wanted to join Everton in the first place.
Sissoko left the France training squad and headed to London in order to discuss potential deals with Premier League clubs. After Newcastle accepted a £30m bid from Everton, the player allegedly rejected calls from Toffees boss while he was 'on his way' up to Liverpool.
It is thought that Sissoko waited in London in order to hold out for a move to Spurs as he didn't want a move to Merseyside.
A fitting end to a crazy transfer window!
