The French television station LCI brought together Jean Paul Mira, head of the resuscitation service at the Hospital Cochin in Paris, and Camille Locht, director of research at the Inserm, the French health and medical research institute. In their talk, one option emerged: the possibility of conducting clinical trials in Africa to study and combat COVID-19. Something that outraged some Africans in the game.
Guys like Samuel Eto'o and Didier Drogba, already retired, as well as the current Istanbul Basaksehir player, Demba Ba, reacted quickly and hard on social media to this possibility.
The former Barça and Inter striker, among others, was the most forceful of all. "Sons of b**ches," wrote the Cameroonian, who also got involved with some supporters who asked him to "inform himself before giving his opinion".
Drogba, formerly of Chelsea, showed his outrage in a more calm manner. "It's totally inconceivable that we should have to warn about this. Africa is not a laboratory. These statements are denigrating, false and really racist. Help save Africa from the coronavirus. You don't want to use Africans as guinea pigs! It's disgusting. African leaders have a responsibility to protect their people from conspiracies as horrendous as this one," he said.
For his part, Senegalese Demba Ba spoke of racist statements: "Welcome to the West, where the white man is believed to be so superior that racism and weakness become banality. It is time to stand up".
