English media harshly criticises Chelsea after defeat to Madrid

British media on Wednesday highlighted Real Madrid's "winning" spirit after beating Chelsea 2-0 in the first leg of their Champions League quarter-final at the Bernabeu stadium.

In that sense, 'The Times' highlights the "winning" style of Real Madrid coach Carlo Ancelotti, but "especially in Europe", and also of Karim Benzema by scoring his 90th goal in Europe's top competition, as well as Marco Asensio.

They add that Chelsea are not out of the quarter-finals, but stresses that the team has to show "greater resilience, a fierce will to win, to reverse this deficit. And to beat a team as good as Real Madrid, the European champions".

'The Guardian' notes that goals from Karim Benzema and Marco Asensio beat Chelsea with ten men at the Santiago Bernabeu, adding that the London club now have their fourth manager of the season and, "unless they can summon the spirit of 2012 when they host Madrid in the second leg of this quarter-final at Stamford Bridge next Tuesday, they are on course to exit the Champions League".

"Real Madrid beat Chelsea 2-0, with Karim Benzema putting the hosts in front with a simple finish," wrote the 'Daily Mail'.

Here's what the 'Mirror' had to say about the first leg. "Chelsea will need to overturn a two-goal deficit at Stamford Bridge in six days' time after they were humiliated by Real Madrid on Wednesday night". It adds that Frank Lampard's side were "completely outclassed".

"To advance to the semi-finals, Chelsea will need to score and they have not done so in four games. The last time they went this long without scoring was in the 1990s," says 'The Sun'.
