Mead scored the first goal of the Women's Euros in a superb move involving Kirby in the England-Austria match, the opening game of the tournament. The two players had a wonderful understanding, with Kirby assisting Mead, who chipped a bouncing ball over goalkeeper Zinsberger.
Defender Wenninger came close to preventing the goal. She sprinted behind the goalkeeper to try to clear the ball off the line, but failed to do so. She did manage to powerfully kick the ball upwards with her right boot, but the ball hit the crossbar and had already crossed the goal line.
The referee, aided by goal line technology, awarded the goal to the English. They celebrated their goal twice because, originally, it was awarded, but then the play was reviewed again by VAR to make sure that there had been no foul or offside in the build up.

England took the lead early. They scored at an important part of the game, as the home side had started the match better. Kirby's assist, Mead's great ball control and her finishing were crucial.
