With Juventus trailing Atalanta 1-0 in the second half, Max Allegri opted to bring on forward Mario Mandzukic for defender Andrea Barzagli. However, this was more than just a regular substitution for Juve, as the eight time 'Scudetto' winner made his last Juve appearance.
"I have though a lot about the future and the moment has arrived to do it. I'm going to retire at the end of the season", said Barzagli after his side's shock defeat to Spal last month.
After turning 38 in May, Barzagli appeared for the final time against Atalanta. He has played a key part in Juventus' resolute defensive performances in recent years, forming part of the back line that has won eight straight Serie A titles.
Barzagli broke down in tears as he left the pitch for the final time, sharing a hug with Allegri before walking around the stadium in a lap of honour to say goodbye to the Juve fans.
The crowd responded with a warm round of applause, and a banner thanking him was also held up by the Juventus faithful.
