Eintracht head to the Camp Nou for the Europa League second leg with yet another defeat after losing 2-1 at home to Freiburg at Deutsche Bank Park in the 29th round of the Bundesliga.
Austrian coach Oliver Glasner's side have high hopes in continental competition. Domestically, they are languishing in ninth place, a long way from the European places.
Three games without a win - two draws and this defeat - Eintracht went into the visit of Freiburg on the back of a one-goal draw at home to Barcelona in the first leg of their European tie.
Freiburg, one of the revelations of the Bundesliga, have higher expectations in the league and ended their slump in Frankfurt. They had taken one point from a possible six. They improved their numbers against Eintracht in a game the visitors got back on track on the half-hour mark when Italian Vincenzo Grifo scored from a pass by Hungarian Roland Sallai.
The home side equalised at the start of the second half. Filip Kostic finished off a good team move after a pass from Jens Hauge to beat Mark Flekken.
The game was up in the air but it was Freiburg who took their chance from a set-piece. Christian Gunter's free-kick was headed into the six-yard box by Nils Petersen, who again beat Kevin Trapp.
Eintracht went in search of an equaliser and went on to score four minutes from time through Kristijan Jakic, but the referee, on the advice of the VAR, disallowed the goal for offside. Eintracht remain anchored in ninth place, six points behind sixth-placed Hoffenheim in the European zone. Freiburg are fifth.
