Dortmund had the worst possible start, conceding a goal within the first minute of the game.
The BVB kicked off, but quickly lost the ball, and a rebounded pass allowed Poulsen to flick on to Augustin.
The Leipzig forward was able to hold off Diallo, and slot the ball under Burki and into the back of the net.
All in the first 31 seconds of the game!
The first-half continued to be an exciting affair.
However, for the first 20 minutes, Dortmund still didn't look like their normal selves, and Leipzig were playing well, easily matching their intensity.
Phillipp and Pulisic had the side's first opportunity, as the latter was threaded into the area, only to miscontrol the ball.
Minutes later, Dortmund were able to equalise.
A run down the left hand side and a top quality delivery provided the perfect opportunity for Dahoud, who jumped into the air, heading a bullet goal past Gulacsi.
Both teams turned up the intensity as the clock wound down to half-time, which also meant the referee had more to do.
In minute 39, Dortmund were awarded a free-kick on the left-hand side of the Leipzig area.
Captain Marco Reus stepped up to take. He sent the ball flying over the wall, and it dropped neatly over the keeper and into the back of the net.
On replay, it was then revealed that it had taken a deflection from the head of Sabitzer, but Dortmund were happy enough as they took the lead.
Dortmund were able to put more between them and their visitors in the final minute of the half, as Witsel pounced on a rebound to score a rather tasty bicycle kick.
Unfortunately for the fans, and for Leipzig, the second half was rather uneventful.
Dortmund dropped back slightly, and although they were still attacking in phases, they were on the whole, more defensive.
This made life hard for Leipzig, who were still looking to get a goal or two to get them back in the game.
Leipzig did force some good saves from Burki, but on the whole, Dortmund controlled the second half well.
The only chances Leipzig got were through Dortmund mistakes, not from them breaking down the defence.
One of their nearest chances was their free-kick in minute 52, which Burki spilled, and Leipzig came inches from tapping home for their second.
However, it was not meant to be for the side.
In minute 90, Reus was able to truly put his name on a goal.
Dortmund were able to intercept a ball in the middle of the field, and Reus was played through.
He made a quality run, before calmly finishing in the bottom-right corner past the onrushing Gulacsi.
