According to the newspaper 'Sport', the arrival of the Ajax central defender is the absolute priority for Barça. It looks like the deal is on track. In the event of this signing, the club has divided the current defence into three groups.
In the first are the fixed. Gerard Pique and Clement Lenglet have their place assured at the Camp Nou. The captain has had a huge season, while Lenglet has been up to the task, albeit with less brilliance.
In the second step would be Jean-Clair Todibo and Samuel Umtiti. The first is the future of the club, although everything points him moving elsewhere. A loan seems the best option.
On that matter, the Frenchman is not performing at his best level since recovering from a knee injury and does not have the 'indispensable' status. He could be popular on the transfer market.
Finally, we come to the discarded. Jeison Murillo, after his brief presence, will return to Valencia on 30th June, when his loan spell ends. Thomas Vermaelen won't continue either. His contract ends in June and, after five seasons, he will be moving on from Barcelona.
Thus, if De Ligt arrives, the young Ajax defender would share the position with Pique and Lenglet. The first two are secure, while the former Sevilla defender and Umtiti, have been less convincing. If 'Big Samu' cannot convince Barca, the club look likely to let him go.
