Cristiano Ronaldo and ex-father-figure Carlos Queiroz with come face-to-face on Monday, when Portugal face Iran in Saransk.
Queiroz played an integral part in helping Ronaldo settle at Manchester United, and the two were said to share a strong father-son bond.
However, throughout Queiroz's two-season spell as Portugal manager, their relationship became strained, so there will be no love lost when the pair clash at the Mordovia Arena with a place in the final 16 at stake.
Queiroz has been credited with a large portion of Ronaldo's development from an undisciplined 18-year-old into the Real Madrid superstar who joined for a then-world record fee of £80million.
Sir Alex Ferguson was urged by Queiroz to sign Ronaldo from his former club, Sporting Lisbon, in the summer of 2003. Queiroz spent a rather unsuccessful year as Real Madrid manager, before returning to the coaching set-up at Manchester United as Ferguson's assistant.
The pair's close relationship was noticed within the club, with Van Nistelroy reportedly arguing with Ronaldo after a misplaced tackle at training saying: 'What are you going to do? Complain to your daddy?'
A few months after the incident, Van Nistelroy was out.
It was during Queiroz's two-season spell as Portugal coach in which the relationship turned sour.
Queiroz was a defensively-minded coach, and was criticised for poor tactics which didn't bring out the best in players such as Ronaldo.
The relationship completely fell apart when Ronaldo seemingly blamed Queiroz for the failure of Portugal to make it to the final-16 in 2010.
Ronaldo did apologise for his remarks, but the relationship was already beyond saving.
Queiroz subsequently told reporters: 'We are not here to be friends with the players - Portugal needs Ronaldo and Ronaldo needs the national side, but if this shirt unnerves some players, they have no grounds to be there.'
After a poor start to the 2012 European Championship qualifiers, Queiroz was sacked.
To some extent, time may have healed their relationship, with Queiroz joking about his team going up against Ronaldo on Monday.
Portugal know that a win or a draw will put them through, but Iran can advance at the expense of the European Champions should they manage a suprise victory.
