In a tournament when none of the favourites had hit the ground running, Brazil were keen to avoid a situation like Argentina's by winning in St. Petersburg.
However, Costa Rica proved a difficult team to break down and the 'Selecao' didn't find their breakthrough until the 91st minute.
Roberto Firmino headed Marcelo's cross from the left across to Gabriel Jesus who looked to have ruined the chance with the poor first touch.
Thankfully for Brazil, Coutinho raced onto the loose ball, prodding his effort through the legs of Keylor Navas to make it 1-0.
The South American side then made it 2-0 a few minutes later through their talisman Neymar.
Coutinho feed Douglas Costa on the right who squared to the Paris Saint-Germain forward to tap into an empty net and round off an important victory.
