The first half was very hard fought. Both teams created chances and Rayo made it difficult for Real Madrid to play the ball out from the back thanks to their high pressing. Comesana gave the home side the lead but Madrid came back with a goal from Modric from a penalty and another from Militao. However, minutes before half-time Alvaro Garcia equalised.
The match did not start in the best way for the 'Merengues'. The home side took the lead in the 5th minute with a goal from Comesana. Alvaro Garcia found Fran Garcia on the left flank with space. The Spaniard drove the ball and crossed to the penalty spot where Comesana was. The midfielder beat Courtois with an effort to the far post.
However, Fran Garcia fouled Asensio inside the box and although the referee did not see it, the VAR corrected his decision and awarded a penalty for Ancelotti's men. Modric scored the equaliser from the penalty spot.
As we all know, Real Madrid is synonymous with comebacks and just three minutes later Militao turned the game around by heading past Dimitrievski at the far post from Asensio's cross from the corner.
Rayo Vallecano were quick to respond with a heavy blow for the 14-time European champions. A minute before half-time Alvaro Garcia received the ball inside the box after a rebound and volleyed past Courtois at the near post to restore parity.
The VAR was once again in the spotlight after deciding to retake Trejo's penalty as Courtois stepped out of position before the player shot. This time the Spaniard did score from the spot to give the home side the lead again.
