Porto started the game the brighter of the two sides, clearly wanting to bring the fight to Chelsea and force errors from the London side.
And they nearly achieved this on a number of occasions. The most notable of which came from Mendy's misfired clearance on just 12 minutes, which found it's way to Corona whose shot was blocked by the Chelsea defence. Around 20 minutes later came the next error, full-back Ben Chilwell misjudging the bounce of the ball and allowing Corona the chance to shoot again from inside the box. The Mexican failed to hit the target again, firing way over.
Chelsea were relieved to hear the ref's half-time whistle, with pressure gradually mounting throughout the first half. Tuchel's men came out stronger in the second, with significant chances falling to Cristian Pulisic and Mason Mount. Both unable to convert from close range.
As the game continued, time began to ran out. Porto's spirits dampened accordingly whilst their frustration rose. Chelsea's Cristian Pulisic on the receiving end of a number of hard challenges.
The game looked destined to finish goalless until substitute Mehdi Taremi scored a beauty of a bicycle kick in the closing minutes of the match. Unfortunately for Conceição's team, this stunning piece of magic proved too little too late, and Chelsea held out for a 2-1 aggregate victory.
By no means an inspiring performance from Chelsea, but it certainly was efficient. They reach the semi-finals of the Champions League for the first time since their 2014 exit to Atletico Madrid, with many pundits giving them an outside chance of winning the tournament this year.
They will go on to play either Liverpool or Real Madrid on April 27th, the winners of which will be revealed in Wednesday's match at Anfield.
