Champions League final ends with 53 supporters arrested

The London Metropolitan Police (Met) said on Sunday that 53 people were arrested on Saturday in connection with the Champions League final at London's Wembley Stadium.

Most of the arrests were for attempting to enter the stadium without a ticket, the Met said, adding that five of those arrested were for invading the pitch.

More than 2,000 officers were deployed in the British capital on Saturday as security was tightened across the city for the final between Champions League winners Real Madrid and German side Borussia Dortmund at Wembley.

A Met spokesman said law enforcement officials were confident that ‘the vast majority’ of attempts to enter the stadium were unsuccessful. "Videos shared online showing groups running towards tickets do not necessarily represent successful attempts to enter the stadium," the spokesperson said.

"Major sporting events often attract attempts by those without tickets to get around fences or gain entry. There was a robust police operation to support Wembley's security plan and officers have worked closely with stadium stewards and staff to maintain security at all times." he added.

Real Madrid lifted the Champions League trophy for the 15th time after beating Dortmund 2-0.
