Mohamed Camara's act will have consequences. The Monaco player decided to tape over the LGBT support patch he wore on his shirt on the last matchday of the Ligue 1 season.
The 24-year-old midfielder had already absented himself from the support events in the run-up to the game against Nantes, and then surprised everyone by appearing with the patch taped to his shirt.
A decision that was initially based on religious beliefs, but which will have consequences. French sports minister Amelie Oudea-Castera confirmed to 'RTL' that she had spoken to the league to demand the harshest possible sanction for Camara's behaviour.
"It is unacceptable behaviour. I have been able to speak to the LFP and I have conveyed my point of view to them about what happened in the match and conduct like this is subject to the harshest possible sanction both for the player and for the club, which allowed this to happen," Oudea-Castera told RTL.
Although he congratulated him during the match, in which he scored a goal, Monaco coach Adi Hutter expressed his disapproval of the player's decision: "First of all, I want to say that, as a club, we support this Ligue 1 initiative. There will be an internal discussion with him to understand more about what happened".
