The player suffered the injury in the 1-1 draw against Argentina, and medical staff for his side will continue to monitor his progress.
Iceland continue their World Cup campaign in a match against Nigeria on Friday, and their assistant coach Helgi Koldvidsson confirmed that the side will have to wait until the last minute to know whether the player will be fit or not.
Gudmundsson has become an integral part of the Icelandic national team, starting all five of their games at Euro 2016. This includes the famous victory over England which made headlines around the world.
FIFA rules mean that once the tournament has commenced, it is not possible to call up any replacement players and so the team will be hoping that the winger can recover quickly.
With their draw against group-favourites Argentina, the team which represents just 300,000 people will fancy their chances of progressing from the group.
