Joe Hart made his first Premier Legaue start as a Burnley player in the game but he was largely untroubled as the 'Clarets' dominated for long spells.
Jack Cork thought he had found an early opener against his former club as he curled home from inside the box but his effort was quickly chalked off for offside.
Alex McCarthy kept his place in the home goal despite the summer signing of Angus Gunn and he impressed once again with a series of saves to prevent his side from going behind.
The first came as Aaron Lennon pounced on a loose ball to race in behind, with McCarthy staying big to deny the speedster.
Mario Lemina ensure that Joe Hart was keeping his focus as the break approached when he headed Ryan Bertand's left-wing cross goalwards but the Burnley goalkeeper was more than equal to it.
McCarthy was called into action once again on the stroke of half-time as he got down low to keep out Jeff Hendrick's header after Ben Mee brilliantly kept the ball alive at the far post.
The second half started in the same vein, though a double change just before the hour mark brought the hosts back into contention.
Mohamed Elyounoussi and Danny Ings joined the fray, with the former almost having an instant impact as his corner was almost headed into his own net by Ben Mee, only for Ashley Westwood to spare his team-mate's blushes by heading off the line.
Lemina forced another save from Hart as he got the run on his man to meet a corner from the right, whilst Ings looks sharp and hungry to make an impact on his debut.
However, the best he could muster in terms of efforts on goal were a couple of errant headers as neither side was able to find the goal that would have sent them home with three points in the bag.
