The incidents began late on Tuesday evening, when the police were called to the Plaza Mayor because of complaints about noisy Leicester supporters. The police had to use force to move some fans in what witnesses described as 'an out-and-out battle'.
Robberies were also reported in the Spanish capital's train stations, with the English supporters shouting 'It's free, it's free!'.
The shameful images could be seen again just hours before the game at the central square in Madrid, a popular destination for tourists. Violent supporters were reported smashing stands and shops around the city centre.
It is quite probable that the supporters' behaviour forced the police to intervene, though nothing is definite as of yet, as it seems a minority of supporters are looking to make a nuisance of themselves.
In last night's police raid fans were said to be singing in a good-natured spirit: 'We [witnessed] police targeting groups of people, smashing beers from tables and even them throwing chairs towards the fans as well charging with batons and riot shields' said Aaron Richard Howells, who was at the square.
Eight arrests have been made, all of which appear to be Leicester City fans.
