It happened as within the hour of the start of the match. In five minutes, Borussia Dortmund might have thrown away all their year's work for the Bundesliga, as Bayern were one point clear of Borussia before the match began (with only 12 minutes left to play).
With 1-2 on the scoreboard, Marco Reus was shown a red card for a very dangerous and unnecessary foul. Borussia's captain came in from behind with an harsh tackle that could have easily been avoided.
The referee did not hesitate, as Marco Reus could have injured his opponent, as the blow to the Schalke 04 player was aimed directly to his ankle. It was a direct expulsion and Borussia was left with ten.
Taking advantage of the free kick, Caligiuri scored and made it 1-3, causing Dortmund even more misfortune. Then in the 66th minute, just over five minutes after Reus was sent off, Wolf was also sent off and Borussia were nine players and two goals down.
