Spanish football chief Luis Rubiales refused to resign on Friday after a week of heavy criticism for his unsolicited kiss on the lips of player Jenni Hermoso following Spain's Women's World Cup triumph.
"I will not resign, I will not resign, I will not resign. A consensual 'peck' is enough to get me out of here? I will fight until the end," shouted Rubiales at an emergency meeting of the football federation.
As a result, several Spanish players such as David de Gea, Iker Casillas and La Liga president Javier Tebas, among others, have shown their disappointment with the Spanish football boss on social media.
Meanwhile, Betis striker Borja Iglesias has decided to leave the Spanish national team until Rubiales leaves his post, the international announced on Twitter.
"I am sad and disappointed. As a footballer and as a person I don't feel represented by what happened today in the Ciudad del Futbol de Las Rozas (the Spanish FA headquarters). I find it sad that they continue to press and focus on a colleague (Rubiales).
"Wearing the Spanish National Team shirt is one of the greatest things that has happened to me in my career. I don't know if at some point I will be an option again, but I have made the decision not to return to the National Team until things change and this type of act does not go unpunished.
"For a fairer, more humane and decent football," he wrote on Twitter. Borja Iglesias has only played 2 games for Spain but he was one of Luis de la Fuente's call-ups for the following matches.
