The England international was one of a number of names on City boss Pep Guardiola's hitlist during the summer, but the Spaniard eventually decided to pursue Monaco's Benjamin Mendy instead.
However, with the French defender now facing a lenthy spell on the sidelines with a torn anterior cruciate ligament, City are on the hunt for a replacement and Bertrand's name has once again been mentioned.
The 28-year-old has established himself as one of the most consistent left-backs in the Premier League since joining the 'Saints' from Chelsea in 2015.
Bertrand has strted all eight of Southampton's games in the Premier League so far this season, but English publication 'The Daily Mail' reports that he would jump at the chance to make the move to the Etihad in January should it arise.
Southampton are reluctant to part with the former Chelsea man, but are aware that should City make him their main target, it will be difficult to rebuff a big-money approach.
Bertrand is by no means the only name in City's sights either, with the club having also sent scouts to watch Espanyol defender Aaron Martin against Levante on Friday.
