Heart-breaking news for Germany and football in general. Former Bayern Munich and Germany player Gerd Muller passed away in the early hours of Sunday morning, aged 75.
"Today is a sad, dark day for FC Bayern and all its fans," said club president Herber Hainer. "Gerd Müller was the greatest striker there’s ever been, and a fine person and character of world football. We’re all united in deep mourning with his wife Uschi as well as his family. FC Bayern wouldn’t be the club we all love today without Gerd Müller. His name and memory will live on forever.”
'Torpedo' Muller, as he was known, was the most influential figure at Bayern Munich. He scored a staggering 566 goals in 707 matches and is the top scorer in the history of the Bundesliga, with 365 strikes to his name.
World Cup and Euros winner with Germany, Balon D'Or winner in 1970, Golden Boot in 1970 and 1972, Bundesliga top goalscorer in seven different seasons - the honours of Gerd Muller are simply spectacular.
Muller was closely involved with Bayern Munich, right up to his passing. In addition, until May this year, he held the record for the number of goals in a single Bundesliga season, which was eventually overtaken by Robert Lewandowski.
"The news of Gerd Müller’s death deeply saddens us all," said CEO and ex-goalkeeper Oliver Khan. "He’s one of the greatest legends in the history of FC Bayern, his achievements are unrivalled to this day and will forever be a part of the great history of FC Bayern and all of German football.
"As a player and a person, Gerd Müller stands for FC Bayern and its development into one of the biggest clubs in the world like no other. Gerd will forever be in our hearts,” he concluded, as the world of football pays its respects to one of the greatest goalscorers of all time. Bayern did so by switching their entire website to a monotone hue.
