Iceland needed to beat Croatia to stand a chance of progressing to the Round of 16, but Milan Badelj's volley found the back of the net in the second half to leave the island nation with a mountain to climb.

The only way Iceland could qualify to the knockout stages were if they defeated Croatia and the result between Argentina and Nigeria was favourable.

However, they would be facing an exit if their opposition took the lead, which they did in the 53rd minute.

Croatia benefitted from a succession of handy deflections and bounces before the ball finally fell to Badelj, who controlled his volley beautifully before sending it crashing into the back of the net from 10 yards.
