Atletico Madrid midfielder Augusto is likely to miss the rest of the season after tearing his anterior cruciate ligament in Atletico Madrid's 1-0 victory over Deportivo La Coruna.

The Argentinian was stretchered off 14 minutes into Atletico's narrow victory on Sunday and the club's website posted yesterday that the player would be "operated upon soon".

A statement read on the Atletico club website: "Tests have revealed Augusto Fernandez suffered a complete tear of the anterior cruciate ligament in his right knee".

Besides Augusto's injury, Jose Gimenez also appeared to pick up an injury in the groin/thigh area and is likely to miss Wednesday's match against Bayern Munich.

The injuries will have undoubtedly put a downer on the narrow victory, which moved Diego Simeone's side within two points of Real Madrid.
