The Wanda Metropolitano was buzzing to see their team be victorious. Atletico made a few changes to their starting XI, as Diego Costa came back into the squad and Correa is seen on the bench. Eibar were said to be the underdogs here and away from home as well, it would be a very hard game for them to play.
The game kicked off and Eibar were on the front foot for most of the time. They got an early lead in the 6th minute thanks to a close-range header from Charles, with an Orellana assist, which put the away side in the lead almost immediately. Eibar certainly started off bright, pushing Atletico into making long balls and pressing a lot, Atletico needed to improve things a lot if they wanted something out of the game.
Eibar's second goal came in the 18th minute as they countered on Costa's missed shot and doubled their lead with a stunning strike from Arbilla after a left footed shot from outside the box to the bottom left corner. Arbilla doubled the lead after saving the goal at the other end, even though he was playing out of position there!
Atletico had a lot of work to do after this to get back into the game and build up their morale and confidence, however, they were not looking strong and so it was an up-hill battle for the home side, who were left stunned by the turn of events.
Atletico seemed to start coming into the game a little more after this and were rewarded with a goal in the 26th minute to start their comeback. The Atletico defenders were far too far up the pitch and so Atletico made the run for it, with just the keeper to contend with Costa managed to get a cross into the box and Joao Felix slotted the ball into the bottom left corner of an empty net. This was the teenager's first La Liga goal and he did very well there.
Right up until the end of the first half Atleti looked a little more lively and were after an equaliser.
The equaliser came in the second half, as 6 minutes in, new subsitute Vitolo made an instant impact as he snook through the Eibar defence and slotted the ball into the bottom corner. All was level after this and all was still to play for! This knocked Eibar's confidence a lot and they didn't look as likely to get another goal.
Alvarez had to go off on a stretcher, Oliviera was his replacement. It is not known what was wrong or how long he will be out for, but we will find out very soon. Eibar will be hoping it is nothing too serious.
Diego Costa tried to level things up twice more in the second half, but they were VAR checked and both times ruled out for offside, obviously Atletico were not very happy at this, especially as the first one was such a close on to call.
Atletico grabbed the winner in the 89th minute after substitute Thomas Partey got the goal and slotted the ball past the keeper, straight down the middle. The subsitutions really were key for Atletico in this game, as two of the goals came from them.Eibar hung on until the end and fought hard to try and get a point out of the game that they had worked so hard for, however, after seven minutes of added time the whistle was blown at the Wanda Metropolitano stadium, in what was a great game to watch! The five-goal thriller saw Atletico Madrid come victorious and Eibar go home disappointed to have thrown away a 2 goal lead.
