There was late drama at the Metropolitano as Atletico Madrid faced Leverkusen in a crucial Champions League battle.
Diego Simeone's men piled the pressure on the German goal in the second half after going 1-2 down at home. Atletico equalised through De Paul in the 50th minute and they were desperately searching for the winner. And, in fact, it could have come in added time.
The ending was absolutely crazy: the referee was about to blow for full-time when the VAR told him to wait. There was something to check. As Hincapie attempted to clear, saw the ball strike his arm. After a VAR review, the penalty was awarded.
Carrasco was the one who decided to take the penalty. Atletico needed to score it to stay alive and they missed it. Hradecky made the save to his left, but the ball fell straight to Saul. His header hit the crossbar and then Reinildo shot towards goal, but it struck Carrasco on the leg and went wide. Luck was certainly not on Atleti's side and they bowed out of the competition.
