Although Nelson Semedo started as the Atlético board's preferred option at right-back, they have reportedly changed their mind over the past few weeks and now favour a move for Napoli's Elseid Hysaj.
The Albanian defender would be a more affordable option for Atlético, after Barcelona made it clear that it would take a huge offer to convince them to let Semedo go.
The change in approach has come after reports in Italy suggested that Napoli president Aurelio de Laurentiis has lowered his demands and is now willing to accept an offer of around 20 million Euros for the right-back - a sum that Atleti would be happy to pay.
Napoli need the money to help fund a move for James Rodriguez, whilst Atlético need to reinforce their back line after allowing multiple first-team defenders to leave this summer.
Although Barcelona are also reportedly desperate to sell players before the end of the month, it seems as if a move for Semedo is now a backup plan due to his higher price tag.
Hysaj, who may not be a well-known name for fans of Spanish football, broke through at Empoli at just 18 and has now played over 300 games for club and country combined.
