The visitors are yet to win a game in this season’s La Liga and came up against a rather flat-footed Atletico side.
Diego Simeone’s side, clearly looking to impress, started brightly with full-backs Juanfran and Filipe Luis pushing high up the pitch. Both whipped in dangerous crosses but the deliveries came to nothing as no Atletico player had the desire to win a header.
Juanfran was released down the right again on 10 minutes and tried to cut back for Koke, but Luis Hernandez was positioned well to clear. The ball bounced into the path of Thomas Partey, but he couldn’t get over the ball and fired over.
The Atletico fans were creating a huge amount of noise in their new stadium but had no clear chance to shout about in the opening quarter of an hour.
Griezmann did hit the post after meeting Filipe Luis’ cross just before the half-hour mark, but the ball rolled out of play in the build up, further nulling the excitement.
Malaga, who were happy to sit back and soak up the Atletico pressure, had the best chance of the half on 36 minutes.
The ball fell to Borja Baston, who drove into the box and fired a shot from a tricky angle towards goal. Oblak blocked and was forced to make another save seconds later from a fierce Federico Recio strike.
Correa had the last half chance of the 45 minutes as he struck a tame strike from the edge of the box, but it rolled into the hands of Roberto in the Malaga net.
Atletico started the second half with more intent as they searched for the opener. Half-time substitute Carrasco looked lively as he cut in from the left and unleashed a strike that rolled just wide.
The home side had a major chance to open the scoring on 49 minutes. The ball pinballed around the Malaga box before falling to Koke, who tried to slot past Roberto but the keeper made a good save.
Griezmann did eventually open the scoring on the hour mark. Correa crossed in from the right and clever movement from the Frenchman saw him get in front of his man to easily slot in at the near post.
Malaga wanted an immediate response but Recio couldn’t find the target with an ambitious effort from outside the box.
Federico Ricca rose highest to meet a Malaga corner on 78 minutes, he managed to direct a header towards the Atletico goal but saw the effort blocked by a red shirt.
The visitors had a huge chance to equalise with just minutes to play. Rolan picked up the ball on the edge of the box, he cut in and rifled a right-footed strike towards goal but Oblak superbly palmed over.
Atletico were not at their best but closed the game out for a historic win an condemned Malaga to their fourth loss in as many games in La Liga.
